The Company
VideoEgg was born in early 2005 and every day delivers millions of ad impressions to users across leading sites, blogs and gaming environments, as well as social and mobile applications. Their unique rich-media advertising and optimization approach delivers higher engagement rates for brands and a more enjoyable ad experience for consumers.
Over the past three years, the business has become focused on solving the online advertising efficiency issue for brands, and in the process, VideoEgg has established itself as true pioneer in the space and will play a key role in defining the new media environment.
The Challenge
When you are growing as rapidly as VideoEgg is, it's just a matter of time before the growth outpaces the management tools you have in place. With hundreds of devices locally, in a co-location, and also spinning up hosts on Amazon's EC2 when needed, the engineering efforts are primarily focused on analysing large datasets. The implications of not having a solution in place would mean lower uptime, and much more complicated debugging process when things went wrong.
The Solution
In the summer of 2008, just as OpsWise was releasing Automation Center, VideoEgg searched for a management solution that would meet their requirements.
While primarily a Linux environment, the solution needed to be portable across other environments, and be 100% web-based, have excellent notification capabilities, and comprehensive file monitoring capability.
After reviewing the competition closely, VideoEgg implemented Automation Center and has extended its use across three different instances - development, staging, and production. They promote workflow definitions and other data from instance to instance. They make extensive use of the workflow capabilities of the product, running hourly workflows. A great deal of the processing that they automate is against large data sets using the Hadoop Grid Engine. When VideoEgg needs more capacity, they spin up Amazon EC2 instances running OpsWise Agents.
The Benefits
In implementing OpsWise Automation Center, VideoEgg now has centralized management, visibility, and reporting of all workload and other scheduled system tasks. They can also more easily recover from a service outage enabling them to meet SLA's and minimize the impact to the business.
When a shared resource (database, storage, network,etc..) comes back online Automation center will automatically run the tasks that it couldn't during the outage - this saves them hours.
During the process of deployment, VideoEgg and OpsWise worked closely to ensure that the solution would meet their requirements. "The working relationship with OpsWise has been
Outstanding." says David O'Dell, Director, Operations "They are constantly seeking our feedback for enhancements to the product. When we do find problems they immediately come up with a work-around. We also have regular access to their VP of Engineering."
