Spring 2009 Release Notes

Enhanced Time Restrictions on Time Triggers

With this release, you can now set up more sophisticated time restrictions. For instance, you can now schedule complex restrictions such as "Restrict Last Business Day of Month" or "Restrict Every Wednesday of Month".

Dynamic Selection of Tasks within a Workflow

For Tasks within a workflow, you can now set Run Criteria and Skip Criteria. To access, right‐click on a task within a workflow and select Run Criteria. Run/Skip Criteria can be based on time/date or based on variable value. Examples would include:

  • Run/Skip a Task if today is Wednesday
  • Run/Skip a Task if today Last Business Day of Month
  • Run/Skip a Task is a Variable value is "MIAMI"

Load Balancing based on Lowest CPU

Previous releases supported both Random and Round‐Robin Load Balancing Techniques. Automation Center now supports Load Balancing based on Lowest CPU

Run a task against every node in a Cluster

On the Windows and Linux/UNIX Task, there is now a field called "Cluster Broadcast". If this field is filled out instead of Agent or Agent Cluster, at run‐time, it will generate a task definition for every agent in the cluster. If defined in a workflow, a task that uses the Cluster Broadcast option will dynamically reset workflow dependencies based on the number of tasks generated.

Database Task - SQL Task

A new task type has been added that enables you to execute SQL Queries against a database, and return the results back to the server for use in downstream tasks in a workflow. Three new built‐in functions have been created in order for you to access result sets. Databases supported include MySQL, MS‐SQL, and Oracle.

Database Task - Stored Procedure Task

Also included in the Spring release is a task type that enables users to execute database stored procedures. It permits you to define input and output parameters as well as returning the results back to the server for use in downstream tasks in a workflow. Databases supported include MySQL, MS‐SQL, and Oracle.

Set Variables via Action Menu

An additional action has been added to the list of actions that is accessible via the Task Definition menu. A 3rd Action, Set Variable has been added. This additional Action allows you to set a variable value when a task hits a certain task state, late/early notification or based on exit code.

Video Classroom

In Automation Center, there is a link to the Video Classroom, where there are dozens of online video tutorials. Check back often as more are being added monthly.

New OpsWise Home Page Gauge

The Task Activity Count gauge is a new gauge that gives you a consolidated count of task activity where status has been consolidated into key areas such as "running", "waiting", or "problems". This gauge is added to the default home page

Skip Trigger if Active

On the Time Trigger definition panel, there is a check box for "Skip Trigger if Active". If it identifies that if the task triggered is running, it will not launch another instance of that task.

Default Number of Lines for Retrieve Output

The previous version of the Retrieve Output had a default of 25 lines, which you could override manually. There is now a configuration parameter where you can define what the default number of lines should be for your environment. The ability to override this value remains available.

Hold on Start

On each task type, including workflow tasks, there is an option to start a task on hold. Once launched, it will be in a HELD status in the activity screen. The hold on start will also be preserved in workflows.

z/Linux Support

Automation Center agents will now run on z/Linux. The core was previously certified on z/Linux as well.

Open up Support Portal in Automation Center

For added convenience, there is now a link to our customer support portal within Automation Center. It will open up the support portal in the right‐hand pane of the browser.

License Manager

A new license manager has been introduced to OpsWise. Out of the box, Automation Center supports 45 days and 5 agents. To see the status of your license, look at the License field in the Overview gauge that can be added to your home page.
